Why Swimming Is Good For Kids

Family time in the water is so fun! There’s nothing better than seeing kids splashing around, having the time of their lives. Not only is swimming is enjoyable; it also has so many health benefits!

Water SAFETY
It is absolutely crucial that all kids know how to swim at a young age. There is water all around us, even if it’s as small as a bathtub. Making sure that your child is comfortable in and around water is essential to their safety. Your child will be prepared should anything happen in the water. Even if your child isn’t interested in competitive swimming, ensuring your child knows how to swim should be done as early as possible. Their interest in the actual sport is just an added bonus!

Fitness
Well first off, swimming uses every one of the body’s major muscle groups. It’s a great aerobic activity that not only gets their heart rate pumping; it’s also a low-impact activity that increases flexibility (while also improving balance and posture!). Children who engage in regular swimming activity might avoid health issues associated with childhood obesity, including diabetes. Want another fun fact? It remains the sport least likely to cause injuries in kids, which as a parent, I’m sure you are relieved to hear!

Health
Kids’ participating in any sport reduces the risk of childhood obesity. The reason swimming is so great is because of the cardiovascular benefits that promote heart and lung health. It’s an activity that can be done solo or on a team, and at any time of year! Another bonus for parents is they don’t have to worry about the weather outside; the kids can swim at any time of year, and won’t be covered in mud!

Strength & COORDINATION
Swimming takes some definite coordination. You need to synchronize what your arms and legs are doing, along with coordinating your breathing and other body movements. Swimming is a sport that encourages building strength through resistance instead of weightlifting. Resistance training exercises can benefit young bodies and prepare them for active lives. As swimming helps with coordination and strength, kids (and adults!) will notice the benefits in other, out-of-water situations as well.

Confidence & MOTIVATION
Swimming is a great way to teach your kids motivation and how to strive for more. They’ll see how much stronger they’re getting. Going from barely being able to swim one length to being able to swim several laps is a great accomplishment. If they’re feeling really confident they can do even more fun stuff with friends, like dive for rings or better yet, completing a water obstacle course!

We hope you and your kids enjoy swimming and the health benefits that go along with it as much as we do!
